這是一首相當深情的歌曲，歌中的男主角 Tommy 為了買一枚戒指跟心愛的 Laura 結婚，不惜參加非法賽車希望賺取獎金，結果不幸發生意外，賠上了自己的性命……

He drove his car to the racing ground
He was the youngest driver there
The crowd roared as they started the race
'Round the track they drove at a deadly pace
No one knows what happened that day
How his car over-turned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say：

Now in the chapel where Laura prays
for her Tommy who passed away

蘿拉和湯米是一對戀人
他希望能給她一切

他看到一張賽車啟事
上面寫著獎金有一千元
他打電話無法聯絡到蘿拉
於是請她母親轉告，湯米說：
告訴蘿拉我愛她

我有一件急事要去做

他把車子開到賽車場
他是最年輕的一位車手
比賽一開始，觀眾大喊大叫
他們以致命的速度繞著圈子奔馳
沒有人知道那天發生了什麼事
他的車著了火翻覆過去
當人們將他從扭曲的車身中拉出來
聽到奄奄一息的他說著：
告訴蘿拉我愛她
告訴蘿拉我需要她
告訴蘿拉不要哭
我對她的愛至死不渝

在教堂裡
蘿拉為死去的湯米禱告
對蘿拉來說，他為蘿拉而活也為蘿拉而死
孤寂的教堂裡，她彷彿聽見他的呼喚：
告訴蘿拉我愛她……

Ray Peterson  (1923-2005)

這首歌當年因為歌詞涉及賽車與死亡，在保守的社會風氣下衛道人士擔心對年輕人會產生影響而有諸多爭議。然而還是因旋律動人在美國走紅了起來，並流傳到了英國；發行的美國RCA唱片公司想打入英國市場卻不得其門而入(當時的英國比美國更保守)，直到英國EMI唱片公司請來當地歌手 Ricky Valance 翻唱，廣播電台不斷為其放送打歌，後來才登上英國排行榜三週冠軍。

同年 Skeeter Davis 曾發行一張「Here's The Answer」專輯，除了收錄別人的流行曲之外，也同時收錄自己唱的回應歌曲，當中便唱了一首回應這首歌的「Tell Tommy I miss him」：
