獨樹一格的前衛搖滾 Kansas

翻開對70'年代抒情搖滾的印象,古典搖滾樂團 Kansas (堪薩斯)的「Dust In The Wind」與「House Of The Rising Sun」、「Heart Of Gold」,一直是記憶體中必備的儲存。

也是心目中總是將之一氣呵成的三部曲代表作。

閉著眼,我沉浸在小提琴與吉他相互纏繞的地帶,試圖體會 Kansas 以西方的寓意描繪東方佛家中,佛法的核心要旨「萬物到(盡)頭皆是空」的真義。然而,在音樂的符號裡,我依舊選擇讓耳朵接收到的旋律帶領著我,在腦海中描繪各種由音樂產生的、自我想像的圖樣,縱使朦朧虛無,仍然自醉~


Kansas - Monolith (1979)

1973年正式成軍的美國前衛搖滾樂團 Kansas (堪薩斯),在'70年代當英國與歐陸前衛搖滾風潮橫行天下的時候,可算是美國前衛樂團的唯一精神棟樑,有受過古典樂訓練的小提琴手 Robby Steinhardt 這個團員,使他們大量地運用小提琴擔任主要配音樂器,鍵盤手兼吉他手 Kerry Livgren 與嗓音渾厚高亢的主唱 Steve Walsh,也融入美國人最引以為傲的藍調作為編曲基調,為 Kansas 譜寫了不少膾炙的經典名曲,形成獨樹一格的前衛搖滾風格。

然而,世人對這第一個以美國地名作為團名、第一個將小提琴大量融入搖滾樂的樂團,最有印象的兩首歌,或許仍屬 "Carry On Wayward Son" 和 "Dust in the Wind" ,沒有翻到另一面,就容易忽略了其他好歌吧......

寂寥者夜伴曲~Rainy Night in Georgia/喬治亞的雨夜

上一篇提及了「Midnight Train to Georgia」之後,腦子裡便浮現了一首同樣在70'年代非常好聽,由鄉村/靈魂歌手 Brook Benton 翻唱而登上1970年美國 Hot Chart 排行榜冠軍、被譽為「排行榜上最優美、最哀傷的十首歌之一」的「Rainy Night in Georgia」。

有時候,人生道路上佈滿了荊棘,無法前行;如同立定在岩壁上的一點,向上苦尋無路,又不甘就此滑落,於是我們努力地踏在這個登板,期望至少能在出現一絲向上攀爬的希望之前,將自己維持在原點。

無所適從的時候,當你徘徊在雨夜的街頭,對生命充滿著無力感之際,我想,這樣一首絲絲扣入心弦的歌曲,自白一般的靈性細語,加上悲泣的提琴聲、憂愁的吉他與風琴聲,或許是能稍稍撫慰你與你的寂寞,到天明的朋友......

1932年出生、來自南加州的黑人歌手 Brook Benton,從青少年時代就進入歌壇,是個嗓音柔美、相當富有個人風格的藝人。1948年移居紐約發展,剛開始錄製了好幾百首Demo帶,向其他的藝人推銷自己的作品,也在1953年推出個人唱片,不過直到結識了擅長作曲的製作人 Clyde Otis 與 Belford Hendricks 成為作曲搭檔後,用裝飾著華麗弦樂變奏的風格詮釋著許多 R&B 的經典,才漸漸受到世人賞識,接著更於1959年以和他們三人共同譜寫出來的「It's Just a Matter of Time」獲得全美第三名而造成轟動。後來,他又陸續唱紅了「So Many Ways」、「The Boll Weevil Song」和「Hotel Happiness」等一連串的暢銷曲,和女歌手 Dinah Washington (黛娜‧華盛頓)合唱的「Baby (You've Got What It Takes)」更是暢銷百萬的金唱片。

歌喉出眾的 Brook Benton 歌路寬廣,舉凡流行經典、藍調和黑人的靈歌,都是他的拿手絕活,而他所譜寫的作品更是許多實力派歌手爭相灌錄的最愛。60'年代中期,他的歌唱生涯曾經一度下滑,但是接著他又在1970年推出了這一首轟動國際的經典「Rainy Night in Georgia」,將歌唱生涯再度攀昇並延續到整個70'年代;不過在80'年代,他由於罹患的脊椎髓膜炎逐漸惡化且感染了肺炎,最後不敵病魔糾纏,在1988年4月離世。

而這首由 Tony Joe White 在1962年所寫的歌,1969年收錄於自己第二張專輯「Continued」中仍未能受到青睞,直到1970年才由 Brook Benton 演唱而一舉成名,據說是因 Tony Joe White 經常在酒吧演唱後因酗酒而大鬧現場,其個性極不得人緣,隨著年齡漸長才慢慢收歛。

2014年1月17日音樂記者 Ray Shasho 採訪 Tony Joe White,70歲的他回想並敘述了當年寫下這首歌曲的過程:『高中畢業後我離開家鄉路易斯安那州,帶著一把吉他跟一些行李到喬治亞州去找我生活在那邊的姐姐,我找了個開貨櫃車載公路上往返的工作,可是只要下雨天公司就叫你休息,於是這麼多的下雨天,我只能待在姐姐家裡玩玩吉他做些什麼地,閒過一整晚。三個月後當我搬到德州時,那些無聊日子裡的想法在我腦中縈繞不去,有天我在收音機上聽見了「Ode to Billie Joe」突然想起,哇!是啊!這太他媽的真實了,我根本就是 Billie Joe!我就曾在棉花田裡生活,我知道那種爛感覺,所以我開始嘗試寫下點什麼東西---某些我深刻體會的想法---而那陣子我也和我的鼓手與貓王及 John Lee Hooker 同台過,我沒有原創曲我知道,而後當我有次坐下來聽著 Bobbie Gentry 時,我想,嗯,我砸過了那麼多喇叭,在喬治亞州的我多麼清楚那該死的雨夜,所以我很幸運地在第一次寫下這刻骨銘心的感覺後,它竟然可以流傳這麼久。而這也是我日後寫歌時,謹記真誠地將自我的想法寫出來的啟蒙。

1920年代早期,「House Of The Rising Sun」在美國黑人文化中常用來作為妓院的代名詞,傳統版本的歌詞所描述的並不是男性經驗,而是少女淪為娼妓之後的悔恨。根據民謠學者 Alan Lomax 在1941年的著作「Our Singing Country」中指出,「House Of The Rising Sun」原本是傳統英國歌謠,1862年聯盟佔領紐奧良期間,Marianne LeSoleil Levant 826-830聖路易斯街開了間妓院,後來因鄰居抱怨,在1874年被迫結束營業

直到1964年被英國樂團 The Animals 改編後,這首歌才變成描寫男性經驗的歌曲,並且同時進入英國 Chart 流行榜及美國 Billboard 告示排行榜的冠軍,也讓這首歌成為眾所皆知的經典歌曲。

這個名叫「House of The Rising Sun」的妓院是否真的存在呢?一本書名為「Offbeat New Orleans」(與眾不同的紐奧良)的旅遊指南堅稱,早在19世紀中晚期,1862年到1874年之間,「House of The Rising Sun」這所妓院的確存在,並且有地址為證︰826-830 St. Louis St.。而「House of The Rising Sun」是以這所妓院的鴇母 Marianne LeSoleil Levant 的姓氏命名;她的姓氏翻譯成英文便是「The Rising Sun」的意思。




事實上仍沒有人能確認此事,甚至從歌詞語意中,許多人認為那其實是紐奧良教區的一間女子監獄。

但當這首歌廣為流傳之後,許多人仍對於是否真有這間名為「House of The Rising Sun」的妓院感到好奇,The Animals 的主唱 Eric Burdon 在被詢問此事時曾經明確地表達過他的意見:「很多人都來找我並跟我說:『你想知道真正的日昇之屋在哪裡嗎?』我回答他們:『我以前就聽過那一間了。』
後來我曾經親自去找。我去過男性監獄、女性監獄、精神病院,找過一些販毒份子或賭徒、酒鬼,甚至到過私人聚會場所詢問,那些人也都表明非常樂意帶我去(日昇之屋,意指妓院)....」

最後他笑了笑,說:「這不過只是英國人傳唱關於女孩淪入妓院的一首歌,那些旅遊業者根本是為了吸引觀光客才杜撰出來這樣的故事。
