大歌星背後的 Albert Hammond


現今郵務發達，個人可依喜愛的人、事、物訂製郵票，但畢竟都僅屬於個人私好。而當一個國家為某特定人士發行郵票時，該人物必定有其重要事件或成就光耀了國家。



家族源自於 Gibraltar (直布羅陀) ，二戰後移民至英國的 Albert Hammond，最為人熟知的歌曲為「It Never Rains in Southern California (1972)」，他本身是個創作歌手，也是個優異的流行／搖滾音樂寫歌者，從'60年代至今寫過的歌讓許多歌手爭相演唱(後註1)、成為膾炙人口的經典之作，除此之外，他也是個優秀的錄音師，更是許多大歌星背後的推手／音樂製作人(後註2)，2008年6月19日登上「Songwriters Hall of Fame (創作名人堂)」，這一份榮耀讓他的家鄉直布羅陀政府引以為傲，計畫於2010年為他發行一套慶賀性質的紀念郵票，每一套郵票中都會印製上 Albert Hammond 與他最喜愛的歌或創作的暢銷經典歌曲如「Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now」、「When I Need You」、「The Air that I Breathe」。



Albert Hammond

Albert Hammond 的家族來自於應屬於西班牙的英國殖民地直布羅陀，二次世界大戰後，家族遷徙到英國定居，1944年5月18日 Albert 出生於英國倫敦，出生後舉家返回直布羅陀，於是他的童年及受教育時期都在直布羅陀成長。生長的環境所致使得 Albert 精通英語及西班牙語，而生長的過程 Albert 也跟當時的英國年輕人一樣喜愛搖滾樂。1960年左右 Albert 終於離開家人去追求他的音樂，加入直布羅陀的當地樂團「The Diamond Boys」，只是沒那麼成功地打出知名度，因為這個樂團大部分唱的是西班牙流行音樂，首次在馬德里登台時，他們只能站在一些當時的知名歌手或搖滾前輩如 Miguel Ríos 旁邊，直到1966年，Albert 加入了一個英國樂團「The Family Dogg」，在1969年他們終於以「A Way of Life」一曲打進英國Top 10熱門音樂排行榜後離開樂團。

由於本身是創作歌手，Albert 在一次偶然機運中遇見了同樣擅長創作的 Mike Hazlewood，兩人對音樂的理念一致，於是一拍即合，開始了共同創作之路。1969年底他和 Mike 合作寫的歌曲如 Leapy Lee 所唱的「Little Arrows」、「Make Me An Island」，1970年 Joe Dolan 的「You're Such a Good Looking Woman」、The Pipkins 的「Gimme Dat Ding」，1971年(下註) The Fortunes 的「Freedom Come, Freedom Go」、Blue Mink 的「Good Morning Freedom」，都交出非常亮眼的成績，成為英國當時最成功的創作團隊之一。

    (註)在此期間，由於經濟拮据，Albert 也曾在 Michael Chapman 的第四張唱片中配唱，也短暫地到錄音室幫人製作及灌製唱片，也順便將他和 Mike 寫的歌錄製成唱片 Demo，以尋求更大的發展。

這些成就並不能滿足 Albert 和 Mike 的理想，他已經將錄音及音樂視為自己生涯的專長，於是兩人決定前往美國投石問路；但美國市場當時對於他們兩人在英國的成就不感興趣，唱片公司總是拒絕接受他們的作品，直到哥倫比亞唱片願意以歌手身分讓他加入，總裁 Clive Davis 要他試唱幾首歌來聽，聽了之後終於有機會灌錄唱片發行，1972年，他跟 Mike 在倫敦時所寫好(註)的「It Never Rains in Southern California」甫推出立即一炮而紅，站上美國 Billboard Hot 100 chart 的第五名，甚至全球暢銷百萬張，同專輯中最後一首歌「The Air That I Breathe」，也在1974年由 The Hollies 翻唱成為冠軍歌曲。          

  (註)2002年，Albert 在一次電話專訪中提及關於和 Mike 一起寫出「It Never Rains in Southern California」的靈感，他說：「這首歌，是我們到洛杉磯之前在倫敦寫的，而當時我們已經決定要前往了...我對 Mike 說了一個關於我自己年輕時在西班牙車站外面乞討的故事。當時的我餓得要命，身上卻沒有半毛錢，也不願意讓我家人知道，而我的表哥正度完蜜月，他從車站走了出來看到我，我甚至沒有認出是他，還向他乞討，結果他跟我說『你應該感到羞恥，我一定要告訴你父親。』我說：『拜託你別告訴他，他鐵定會抓狂，阻止我繼續走音樂這條路。』後來我表哥帶我回他投宿的旅館，我洗了個澡後，他給了我件乾淨的衣服跟一些錢，我就走了，而他也告訴我父親了。你知道，這就像是歌詞中那句『Will you tell the folks back home, I nearly made it。』，當時許多不如意的事情都發生在我生命中最潦倒、正在努力嘗試也快達成目標的時刻，正在嘗試從摩洛哥到西班牙、從西班牙到英國、從英國到美國...這些生命中經過的事情，南加州從不下雨，是我生命的故事。」

「這首歌不只開啟了我個人的事業，也像為我而建立起的屏障穩固了我，它不但是我最重要的歌曲之一，我想也因為它很棒，我真的愛這首歌，它將我生命的軌跡刻劃了出來，我的意思是，我是個藝術家，是個製作人，是個寫歌的人，這似乎是很對的事情，看起來都很對，但如果沒有這首歌，說不定我只是個慢慢走下坡的人，不是嗎？」

Albert 進軍美國的首張專輯創下輝煌紀錄，卻也使得後來推出的專輯「The Free Electric Band (1973)」、「Albert Hammond (1974)」無法超越而乏人問津，1975年他找來製作大師 Phil Ramone 和名作詞家 Hal David 合作，雖然單曲「99 Miles From L.A.」拿下了抒情排行冠軍，但公司卻已失去信心，拒絕為他發行與單曲配合的專輯，他繼續努力之下，竟發現最佳拍檔 Mike Hazlewood 悄悄地失蹤了，著急於發專輯、譜寫歌曲的他於是去找女作詞家 Carole Bayer Sager 幫忙，到她家彈奏了三首新歌的旋律請她填詞，Carole Bayer Sager 對其中一首特別中意，和 Albert 討論之下她發現 Albert 因為工作繁忙到處奔波，經常無法與自己所愛的家人相聚，於是靈感一來填好命名為「When I Need You」的歌曲，專輯完成後 Albert 馬上拿給公司，不料公司置之不理，完全沒有發行的意願，結果1976年，Albert 這首「When I Need You」錄音單曲被另一位英國創作歌手 Leo Sayer 陰錯陽差地挑中為新專輯的主打，1977年登上全美冠軍寶座，也讓 Leo 擁有生平的第一個英國冠軍，而此時 Albert 所屬的哥倫比亞唱片公司才恍然大悟，正式地幫 Albert 發行「When I Need You」專輯，此後這首歌仍持續被 Perry Como、Celine Dion、Rod Stewart、Barry Manilow、Cliff Richard、Donny Osmond 等眾多歌手翻唱，版本不計其數。

Albert 風波不斷的發片事件卻造成驚人的結果，幾次被翻唱的歌曲都大紅之後，許多大牌歌手都紛紛找他邀歌。又經過1977年「When I Need You」發行的波折，使得他決定放棄到處旅行的歌手生活，多與家人聚首，'80年代以後便專心從事製作與創作。1976年他的西班牙專輯曾打入拉丁市場，而拉丁情歌王子 Julio Iglesias 也請他幫忙製作專輯，Albert 甚至將自己曾唱過的「Moonlight Lady」交給 Julio Iglesias 翻唱，順利打進英語市場，此後不但分別為 Whitney Houston、Starship、Diana Ross、Radiohead、Chicago、Ace of Base、Tina Turner 等大牌創作／製作，打造出各種不同風格的暢銷曲，時至今日 Albert 寫歌與創作超過40年仍源源不絕，自己也偶爾發行創作專輯，2008年6月19日登上「Songwriters Hall of Fame (創作名人堂)」行列，2010年仍在為歌壇新星 Duffy 第二張專輯寫歌。
