🤣)」1974年這首《The Night Chicago Died》，推出時在英國排行榜獲得第3名，登上美國卻獲得了 Billboard Hot 100 排行榜冠軍，而且還獲得美國唱片工業協會頒授白金唱片，這代表了唱片銷售量至少超過100萬張。#現在網路時代望塵莫及的唱片銷售量啊
是我個人認為極為有趣且蠻喜歡的歌曲。

這首歌曲的背景故事源自於1929年2月14日在美國芝加哥市發生的一起後稱「情人節大屠殺」的謀殺案，有5名「北邊幫(North Side Gang)」幫派份子和另外2人被發現靠牆成排、死在芝加哥北邊的林肯公園(Lincoln Park, Chicago)克拉克街2122號的車庫中。有證人看到2名男子打扮成芝加哥警官，其他人穿着長外套。大約上午10點30分，這2名「警察」領着其他男子走進車庫。
一般認為，這是美國禁酒時期中，由德國裔與愛爾蘭裔組成、以 Bugs Moran (瘋子莫蘭)為首的幫派「北邊幫」，為了販賣私酒利益，而與義大利裔組成、Al Capone (卡彭)為首的美國幫派「南邊幫」爭奪地盤所引起。
然而芝加哥有3個常被提及的地區是北、西和南邊，雖然芝加哥有一個被稱為「東區」的地方，但它位於伊利諾伊州／印第安納州很遠的南側。而東邊距離 Al Capone 在芝加哥 Prairie Avenue 的居所也有幾英里。此外，在20世紀20年代，這個所謂的東區是以一個「東歐的安靜社區」聞名，和歌中描述的幫派爭奪地盤的血腥場所，是完全不同的處所。
歌曲作者 Peter Callender 和 Mitch Murray 在接受採訪時說，他們對芝加哥這座城市及其歷史時期的了解，其實都是【基於黑幫電影】，憑藉著電影情節而來的靈感與自我想像，使他們寫下了這首歌。(Callender 甚至為他對芝加哥地理的解釋辯駁說：「到處都有東邊啦！」)
#實情並無歌詞中的警匪槍戰而且2月不是夏天
後來 History.com 便報導：
「......在英格蘭，有一些年輕人沒有完全掌握所有事實，而在20世紀的70年代，來自 Nottingham (諾丁漢)的流行樂團，將他們對美國歷史的誤解，浪漫地發行了光彩奪目的熱門唱片。雖然它或許從未打算擴及美國市場，但Paper Lace 的《The Night Chicago Died》竟越過了大西洋，成為美國流行音樂排行榜的第1名......」
真實案件與歌詞內容的出入並沒有絲毫影響 Paper Lace 的成就，他們還很白目地把這首歌送給了當時的芝加哥市長 Richard J. Daley，但市長顯然對這首歌並沒有留下深刻印象，或者可以說是非常不喜歡而冷漠以對。
話說回來，這首歌當時在美國如此場銷，Paper Lace 卻以「合約條款」的關係為由，從未到過美國做現場演唱.....

後話：
其實1974這一年，Paper Lace 還有一首講述美國內戰的歌曲「Billy Don't Be A Hero」獲得英國單曲排行冠軍(在我蠻喜歡的一部1994年電影《The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 沙漠妖姬》出現過)，但幾個月之後就被美國搖滾樂團 Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods 翻唱並率先在美國市場發行，還登上了美國排行榜冠軍寶座，反而 Paper Lace 的原唱版本，後來只得到了第96名。
