接觸西洋歌曲是一種偶然，學習英文是一種必然，莫名地產生了興趣，就此萬劫不復。
也許說莫名或萬劫不復都太過牽強，從小學時候便對西洋歌曲產生興趣而來的主動學習英文，至少後來使我國中之後開始有了的英文都能順利過關；比起有些同學放學後可憐地眼巴巴望著我們到處玩，他卻只能暗自飲泣收拾厚重書包，去補習班補什麼學前教育強得多吧。
(不過，這還要歸功於疼愛我的老爸買給我的學習帶......呵呵，以後再說。)
聽英文歌、隨之節拍旋律或擺動或哼唱幾句、(學英文後) 對照歌詞並嘗試理解、練習翻譯～～～成年的現在與幾好喜愛西洋歌曲的朋友聊起，發現大家學習英文的過程都如此地相似：聽、說、讀、寫、譯。
當時的我覺得西洋歌曲的節奏聽起來是那麼鮮明，旋律是那麼動人，演唱者的五官個個那麼「立體」，如同學校美術課素描範本中的美麗人物，而這樣的美麗人物還總自我陶醉地將那份對歌唱的喜悅傳染給聽眾。
我喜歡「陶醉」的模樣，每一次共鳴都彷彿享受了一次快樂的時光。
姐姐帶回來的一套8張還是10張的盒裝「永恆的回憶」系列錄音帶，收錄的是一些60'、70' 鄉村或民謠的老歌，雖然內附歌詞，然而對尚未學習英文的我來說，歌詞無用；卻是我熱中聽西洋音樂的起源。
第一次聽到這首歌時，不懂他們唱的什麼內容，心裡卻直直往下沉：覺得那旋律透著些許感傷與無奈，合聲好美。

無知的少女，早夭的青春。渾沌不明的夢幻中葬送的，年輕的憧憬。
Peter, Paul and Mary以一貫的疼惜憐憫隱含堅強意識的關懷風格，悠悠訴說。
'60年代的美國，是個充滿動盪不安卻有著各種可能性正在誕生的時代，整整延續到70年代的這10年之間，呈現著一種學生知識份子的運動，一種年輕的文化革命：黑人爭取民權，女性爭取平權、性解放，勞工爭取權益，反戰，教育體制甚至家庭結構的革命，四海一家的思想，宗教心靈的追求，甚至如大麻等輕毒品類開始盛行，流行音樂躍居主流的力量等等…‥年輕人以各自不同的追求聚集著，盲目的燃燒那革命意志的騷動。

Peter, Paul and Mary (PPM) 三重唱便是這年代燃燒的一份子。以民謠音樂來表達意念的他們，試圖以歌聲撫慰人們的靈魂創痛並喚醒其知覺，Mary曾說：「我們投身人類必要的權利及使大家呼吸清新的空氣」。他們關心人權，關心家庭與孩子，關懷無依者和環境保護，因和平與正義的精神而反戰，以音樂反諷政府：「說話的字句有時會說謊，但歌唱的字句不會。」Peter說。
自1963年以兒歌諷刺政府的「Puff, the Magic Dragon」後，PPM 翻唱了許多知名創作歌手如Bob Dylan (Blowin' In The Wind)、John Denver (Leaving On The Jet Plane)、Joan Beaz (Don't Think Twice, it's Alright)等人的歌曲，也由於有其優勢且優美的合聲重唱，更將該歌曲發揚光大。例如Where Have All The Flowers Gone本是Pete Seeger的反戰民歌，表出了戰爭的荒謬和週而復始，提醒著人們應從中學到教訓，經PPM 翻唱後成為反戰經典之一：

相較於今時過於膨脹的白話抨擊，PPM的反對聲音是極其溫和、優美，如囈語一般輕柔的，流瀉出的知性意涵，卻如鋼鐵般堅定不容動搖；永無寧日的世界，遙遙無期的和平，我們，仍需要一些讓心靈得以休憩的平靜角落吧！
